I. Geography & Climate
Kon Tum is a mountainous region on the west of Truong Son range, Kontum has a natural area of 961,450 ha, borders to Quang Nam province in the north, to Gia Lai province in the south, to Quang Ngai province in the east, to Laos and Cambidia in the west including hills, mountains, plateaus and valleys at average elevation of 800m. Kon Tum province located in the tropical monsoon, the average temperature from 22C0 to 23C0, annual average humidity 78-87% and average annual rainfall of 1730-1880 mm.
Kontum has Chu Mom Ray National Park that has an area of 50,734ha, Dak Uy Natural Preservation Forest that has an area of 700ha, Ngoc Linh Conservation Forest that has an area of 41.420ha. Kon Tum province is rich in forest ecosystems. The main forest types common in Kon Tum province, including: Closed coniferous forest, closed evergreen tropical rainy forest mixed broadleaf trees, tropical semi-evergreen forest, closed evergreen tropical rainy forest, sparse dry forest (Deciduous forest). According to initial findings, Kon Tum province has more than 1610 species belonging to 734 genera and 175 plant families. Especially, there are many rare species in the Red Book should be protected and developed as: Ngoc Linh Ginseng, Pomu, ..., etc. .. In Kon Tum forest, animals are plentiful and varied with many rare species such as the Gaur (Bos gaurus), Brown Cow (Bos sauveli), tiger (Panthera tigris), forest buffalo (Bubalus bubalis), Langur, Deer, Gibbons, Monkeys, precious birds...
III. Ethnic minorities
The province has a population of about 433 thousands of people with more than 53% are ethnic minorities. The indigenous peoples are Xe Dang, Je Trieng, Ja Rai, Ba Na, Brau, Ro Mam, Ro Ngao. Besides, Kinh people and some ethnic minorities live together. Almost of villagers in ethnic villages still keep the traditional culture such as style of building, way of farming, cloths and festivals... etc.
IV. Travel Activities
Paying a visit Komtum, visitors will have the opportunity to visit and stay a while with a family Bahnar, Ro Ngao or Jarai, to admire the "Rong" houses (the traditional communal house) which has unique design looking like an ax blade point into the sky, or even join them in their traditional festivals. You can do some trekking and village visits to learn about ethnic cultures and enjoy a gong show and dance with the villagers around a camp fire.
The same Buon Ma Thuot and Pleiku, Almost hotels in Kontum are standard and there are some ones are superior such as Indochine hotel and Hoang Van hotel. You can also spend the night in a Rong house or house on stilts in ethnic village of Banar minority.
VI. Getting there & Away
Located at the T-junction of Indochina and there are 2 Highways, Kon Tum province is a main entrance of The Central Highlands. To get in Kontum, we can come from Hoi An via the Truong Son trail (Highway 14) about 320km, from Quang Ngai via Highway 24 about 180 km, from Pleiku about 50km, from Buon Ma Thuot about 250km. from Hanoi / Danang / Saigon, we can come to Kontum by air, via Pleiku airport (40km). Otherwise, Bo Y - Ngoc Hoi, after being upgraded, become an international border gate and it will become the convinient entrance to come to The Central Highlands, Central Coast of Vietnam from Laos.
